Papers, 1843-1864.

This collection contains materials, 1843-1864, concerning the military career of Ambrose Powell Hill (1825-1865) of Culpeper, Va. Included in the papers are diaries, 1849-1850, kept by Hill describing scouting expeditions while serving in the 1st United States Artillery Regiment in Florida, and letters, 1843-1864, to family members while serving in the United States Army in Mexico and Florida and the Confederate States Army in Virginia. Other items include a return of equipment, 1851, for the 1st U.S. Artillery, and a series of regimental orders, 1861-1862, issued by Hill as colonel of the 13th Virginia Infantry Regiment.
